3D Movies with Meta Quest
AWESOME! WOW!
This is probably what you said when you watched a 3D movie for the first time. You can get that same feeling again with 3D in VR!
This guide will help you get started with watching 3D movies on your Meta Quest VR system.
Step 1: Get a player for your headset! I recommend Bigscreen mainly because it’s free and easy to use. Other paid alternatives are Moon VR Player and SkyBox. I have SkyBox and it’s just okay. Not as many environment options (virtual movie theaters/locations) as Bigscreen but it does boast that it’s better quality but I can’t tell the difference. I have yet to try Moon VR Player but it has outstanding customer support and a large community.
Step 2: Get some movies! On Bigscreen, you can rent some select movies. They don’t have the Marvel movies, Hobbit, or Avatar but there are a few good ones in there like Star Trek Into Darkness and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The other way is to download them onto your headset or stream them from your computer using DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance).
DLNA is built into Windows 10/11 (Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Media Streaming Options) and is also an option with Plex Media Server or Moon Link. DLNA quite simply is Network File Sharing. This is a time saving way to stream the movies to Bigscreen on your headset instead of having to transfer the large files via USB from your computer.
But if you are like me and want the highest quality possible, you’ll want to download the movie and then transfer it to the headset’s movies folder.
The best place to download 3D movies is from 3d-hd.club. They have hundreds of movies to download at different resolutions and sizes. The most common is “Half-SBS” (Half width, side-by-side) at 960×1080 per eye but the Meta Quest is fully capable of doing Full-SBS so if you can afford the download size, spring for the extra pixels for the higher quality.
In order to download the movies you’ll need to buy a premium account from MoonDL or TakeFile. I bought a “Full Moon” Package from MoonDL which is 1 year with 512gb per 2 days bandwidth and it has enabled me to download well over 150 movies in just 2 months of using it.
The other way of getting the movies is by ripping your 3D Blu-Ray discs using MakeMKV and then convert them to SBS with BD3D2MK3D. See this if interested in this route: Converting ripped Blu-Ray MKV. I have ripped over a dozen of my 3D Blu-Rays and was able to set the quality I wanted and omit things like extra audio streams and subtitles. You’ll find that not all the files on 3d-hd.club default to English. Get familiar with how to control which audio stream plays and subtitles by pointing at the screen and choosing the options menu in Bigscreen.
QUALITY IS KEY! If you want the best quality, opt for the Full-SBS instead of Half-SBS file.

Be sure to check out The Hobbit trilogy. It has some of the best 3D there is but it’s the enthusiasts that are keeping this medium alive over at 3D-hd.club. The 3D conversions from JFC are right up there with the stuff the big studios were pumping out the past 20 years.
